I came across this as I was trolling through some posts about Campaign Cartographer. It is a nice program put together by "The Welsh Piper" site and has several articles of interest concerning how to generate fantasy *and* historical settings.

The idea here is to enter a few items about the setting you desire and punch a "go" button to get the numbers. There is a downloadable version one can get and use. (I don't know if it can be used on one's website but I imagine it is as it was released under the Creative Commons License. Visit the site and give it a try and then come back and let me know what you think.
